The Divine Mercy Catholic School is located in the Mahogany community of Calgary, 1st Class After Class – Divine Mercy School runs from the school gymnasium and a portable classroom. This 1st Class Location offers a Before and After School Program and Kindergarten program. At 1st Class After Class - Divine Mercy School, we believe it is our mission to make every child feel happy, safe and free to explore and learn, which we achieve through a programming designed specifically to meet the needs of each child, we provide tons of opportunities to engage in STEM, play, physical activities, literacy, clubs, and more.
Our Kindergarten program offers programming that is designed to complement what they are learning in their classroom while still Playing, Growing, Learning & Having fun with weekly themes based on their interests.
Group Play
It is a time for story and language development, music and movement activities, and other varied learning experiences.
Dramatic Play
Our programs all have a pretend and learn area devoted to developing a child’s sense of “make believe”.
Before & After Grade 1-6
Our before and after-care programs go well beyond homework help. We support children in becoming the kindest, most capable, and most resilient version of themselves.
Activities
With regular outdoor time and planned indoor activities, our children experience a world of movement, dance and recreation.
Reading
Books allow children to enter a world of “make believe” and learn about new and exciting things.
Kindergarten Care
Our programs use a curriculum that is individualized to every age, with planned activities that combine learning and fun to create happy, curious kids.
Janis Coughlan
Program Director
Ms. Janis is a Child Development Worker with her certificate in Early Childhood Education. She has had over 10 years’ experience in the child care industry, and has a wealth of knowledge of recreation management.
Ms. Janis has worked with 1st Class since January 2017. When Janis isn't busy in the program, you can find her at one of her children's many extracurricular sports, including baseball, hockey and lacrosse. When Ms. Janis isn't cheering on her boys, you will find her camping, and enjoying the outdoors.
Sohaib Kassem
Assistant Director
Mr. Sohaib, or Mr. S for short, is the Assistant Director for 1st Class After Class’s Divine Mercy location. Sohaib holds his Level 1 in Early Childhood Education and is currently in the process of completing his Level 2. In addition to this, Sohaib holds his Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and is currently in the process of completing his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Sohaib has worked in childcare for the entirety of his university career. His interest in the cognitive and behavioral development in young children led him to pursue his passion of working with children, this passion led him to 1st Class.
Whilst Sohaib is fun, outgoing and loves a good prank or two, he assists in program planning, attaining and exceeding quality standards, observing child development in the Program at Divine Mercy. When Sohaib isn’t working he loves watching sports or studying about astronomy with his beautiful fiancé.
Annie Tran
Assistant Director
Ms Annie has been with 1st Class for over two years now and holds the highest level of qualification in early childhood education. Before joining 1st Class, Ms Annie worked with children with special needs and helping the homeless.
When she's not at work she enjoys spending time with her family especially on game nights and loves hanging out with her nephew and nieces. She also enjoys to read a good mystery book when she has the time to herself.
